Support the Partnership for the Arts in creating a community arts center

Partnership for the Arts and Humanities has recently purchased property in the Cherry Hill Village business district, and is looking for support from our community.  The following article was provided by the Partnership to highlight their work, and ask for donations for the ongoing work to restore the historical buildings in Cherry Hill Village.  The restored buildings will be used to create a regional arts and culture destination, including workshop space, common gallery space and retail outlet.

Significance of Cherry Hill Arts Community

In 1944, Henry Ford opened Cherry Hill Mill as a small factory that was part of his Village Industry Project on the corner of Cherry Hill and Ridge Roads. The Ford Cherry Hill Plant began operations in July 1944; it served two main purposes: to provide training and rehabilitation for returning veterans and to supplement work at the Willow Run Bomber Plant.

Situated directly south of the Henry Ford Village Factory on Ridge Road is the residence hall that housed 18 to 20 war veterans. The arrangement was unique among the Ford Village Industries in that the war veterans, rather than the off-season farmers as in the other Village Industry Plants, were employed to produce parts for Ford’s various assembly plants. The building was originally a creamery built in 1900 until it was purchased and relocated by Ford to its current location.

Our Story

In August of 2012, the Partnership for the Arts and Humanities acquired this site enabling the Partnership to begin developing a strategic plan that will incorporate these historical Canton landmarks along with a master community revitalization plan for Cherry Hill Village. The vision is clear – transform this site into a regional arts and culture destination.

The Partnership believes that the “Cherry Hill Arts District” could contribute to Michigan’s new economy by providing affordable workshop space, in addition to a common gallery space and retail outlet for a unique assortment of locally produced goods. With almost 50,000 square feet in the main building, space would be made available for exhibits, along with offering a large social gathering venue with historical character for public rental. Further opportunities exist to partner with local universities and institutions for the advancement of art in educational settings, both indoor and outdoor across 14 acres.

Mission of Partnership for the Arts and Humanities

The Partnership for the Arts and Humanities is a 501(c)(3) cultural arts organization in Canton, MI. The Partnership’s ongoing mission is to encourage the development of the arts in the community by providing artists with financial support, advocacy and education.

The Partnership was instrumental in the construction of The Village Theater at Cherry Hill Performing Arts Center. The center is home to a number of Western Wayne County performing arts organizations, including: an orchestra, band, chorale groups, youth and adult theatre. Our mission is to encourage the development of the arts in society. On an annual basis, the Partnership provides grant funding to nearly a dozen different volunteer art organizations. The Partnership is committed to expanding the arts in our region while simultaneously revitalizing Cherry Hill Village and preserving the historic landscape of past generations.

How You Can be a Part of Making History

The restoration and remodel of the three buildings (original Henry Ford Village Factory, Creamery/Dormitory, and a 50,000 square foot industrial building) located at the southwest corner of Cherry Hill and Ridge Roads are the historical landmarks at the core of this project. The Partnership is looking for assistance in the following project areas: architectural design, construction, roof repairs, electrical system upgrades, exterior and interior painting, flooring, lighting, plumbing, interior decorating, parking lot improvements and landscaping. Projects can be supported with cash or in-kind contributions.

Cherry Hill Village

A group is working to acquire 400 acres in the village for development. Parcels go from cemetery to Procter and the Hamlet.  It involves many different entities and lots of different contracts to complete.  There is no single plan but the development it will have to follow the CHV/Township pattern book.  The group will want a master development agreement for all of the various parcels that get grouped together for the development.

A dog groomer is moving forward for a CHV store in the Theater business section.  Timing of opening depends on the decision of when to open to service the pets in the village.  Please use the facility when opened.

Sports bar is still pending liquor license. Cherry Martini does not seem to be moving toward reopening because the Liquor license is an issue and the partner not really seeming focused.  He understands business model and is asking all the right questions and is continuing to work to open.

Beztec is actively marketing the parcel at Cherry Hill and Denton to grocery stores.

There are several tacitly interest parties but no firm direction

Old Destaco property,  also known as the Ford Historic building at Cherry Hill and Ridge, is looking to expand the interest by offering to the Township (there is no interest because of the maintenance) or other not for profit corporations.  There are issues with the property such as: Environmental issues (flood plain’ wetland issues), Old clean-up issues, Historic district restrictions/requirements on property.

Vinnie’s a new, hamburger restaurant, on Michigan is getting close to opening. No date yet, though.

Menard’s has expressed considerable interest in locating a store on Michigan Ave.  The Township is working to satisfy their needs for location and parking.

Dicks has decided to open a store on Michigan Ave.  Location is being research because of the many choice options.

Restaurants continue to look at opening in Canton including Michigan Ave because of the population center and limited selections.

Borders store already has several interested parties to lease because of the location and configuration of the building.  There will be no problem filling that location according to the owner.

The Township continues to work on improving the  Website to interest businesses in Canton including working on updating listing of available commercial properties.  They are investigating the subscription to broker services to increase availability of listed properties. 1. Broker’s breakfast – Dec 10th  20 brokers attended. Home sales data briefing from Rose – CHV housing market is very active and have very low time on market compared to other areas. The Township is starting to prepare CHV marketing video (30-60 seconds) for the web, Facebook and other social media distribution. Some brokers have requested additional information about the area.
  2. Beztec – No more plans to convert remaining commercial space from commercial to residential (aside from space already under conversion); Beztec is committed to remaining space being retail.
  3. Schoolcraft College is working with the Township to get a high end restaurant into retail space on Ridge Rd with a known chef (who is a graduate of Schoolcraft’s program) to manage the facility.  The Chef is born and raised in Canton and working out business plans including liquor license.  The business will rely on the community to spread word and support the business.  The Chef knows that quality of food is key to the success or failure.  The Township and Beztek will support with free rent, redo parking, etc. SchoolCraft college views success of this project as key and will help the chefs school. SchoolCraft College is talking about other links for arts and growth of arts programs and is trying to form partnership with Village Theater.
  4. St. Joe Medical Center has no update yet. The Township is planning a meeting with them, but timing hasn’t aligned.  The Township is hoping St Joe will expand on existing IHS facility and look for other ways to boost related medical businesses.
  5. Uptown Sports Bar and Grill – working with liquor control commission to get license.  The Township has provided full cooperation in getting the liquor license. They plan to have a soft open with liquor only then build kitchen to supply food.  They are a couple of weeks away from getting license.
  6. Dog Park – opening targeted for May 20.  The Township expects significant activity because it is the only facility in the area.  They are looking for ideas on related retail or veterinary businesses that will appeal to pet owners.
  7. Parking – The Township is continuing to facilitate additional parking for retail and the proposed restaurant.
  8. Phil Lajoy, supervisor emphasizes the need for support from local residents for the businesses in the CHV area.  They are looking for residents to speak to anyone that might be interested in locating a business in Canton to consider the CHV area.  They request that any leads be passed to the Township and give them a shot at encouraging the business to locate in CHV.  The Township has marketing materials to give them and will do everything possible to support them.  April census data will be released shortly.  The liquor control commission will use numbers to allocate any new licenses for CHV area.  May possibly add more (only have two currently).  Any new applicant can expect 3-4 month process from initial application.
  9. Destaco property – under Non-disclosure agreement (NDA) so can’t say much but something encouraging is happening.  There should be positive news in coming months.
